Gardening Gloves

Rule #1: If you're going to work in your yard in Florida, you need gardening gloves.

Rule #2: Wear the gloves every time you work in the aforementioned yard.

Rule #3: Seriously. :)

Think about everything that can bite, prick, sting, scratch or otherwise hurt you in your yard.

Now think about your hands and how soft, nice and important they are.

Hopefully you've decided that you need to protect yourself.

More than once I have gone to pull up a weed only to find that the local fire ant colony had created a home in it.

Fire ant bites on your hands hurt, for a long time. I'd not recommend it.

When going to purchase gloves, I look for a few things.

First, they have to be long. Mid-forearm is OK, elbow length is better.

Second, look for a leather palm and fingers. This will really help you when trimming something brutal like bougainvilla or cactus.

Third, they have to be sturdy. Do they look like you can drive a car over them and they'd be just fine? Get those!

I used to try to wash my gloves after they got dirty, but I just discovered that it made them stinky and stiff.

So, now I just throw them over the edge of my yard can and let them chill until I need them again.
